Can I be honest with you? Making friends is hard, when we are young we had less problems making friends, we could get around, just needed to find a group of girls/boys with the same doll/toy or similar backpack or even just share lunch (if you had anything good to offer) and you kinda just fitted in. Or even better if you had that 64 pack of Crayola pencils and matching markers you were a God!
I’m not going to lie, I was never great at making friends (comes with being an odd child/introvert) but I got by, and maybe I should have put a bit more effort into it because, as I wrote in a previous post, once you finish uni/ star working its pretty damn imposible. For starters a lot of people move to new places and the friends you do have you don’t see as much and slowly you stop seeing them/speaking to them for long periods of time. Before you realize it, it’s been ages since you spoke, I mean don’t get me wrong I’m lucky enough to have friends who don’t give me a hard time if I disappear for a while. We kinda always just pick up where we left off no matter what. Once we are slapped in the face with adulthood we start to really struggle to balance things and slowly start sacrificing nights out, coffees, etc in order to save money and rest. It’s at this time that when realized how much we took for granted, first of all our parents and secondly our friends.
As we get older and have experienced hurt and betrayal from other people, we become less quick to trust on more quick to judge so we become very closed towards outsiders. So if you have an already established group of friends you are not doing too bad (unless you want to make new ones) but if you are anything like me (attempting life in a new place, far FAR away from home) finding a place to fit in becomes a struggle.
And this sucks because if there is something that makes life better as we deal with this “Adulting” thing a good group of friends, someone who you can count on in all the highs and lows of this chaotic life, the people who you know you can talk to about anything and won’t judge, and the people who get your jokes or tell you that they are terrible.
Social media is making it worse, we are so used to it by now that we forget how it’s normal to interact with other humans, like I’m sure if I went anywhere and just attempted to speak to anybody by saying “hey I like this (insert random activity that stranger is doing) too” I’m pretty sure that person would run away, and that is without attempting to show them photos of my food, pets, etc. And even us, if a stranger approaches us and start speaking to us our first immediate thought is “is go away”.
So imagine if you are in a bar with your friends and a stranger approaches and asks to sit with you because you are drinking the same thing (just as we would have done in preschool) would you let them? Probably not and at the same time if you are in a bar and overheard a conversation that you find funny and you know you would fit in with that specific group, would you be brave enough to approach it?
All and all I think it comes down to as we grow older we start watching out more for ourselves, we don’t have time for dramas/bullshit and are just making sure nobody hurts us or the ones we love. And yes, while it is really great knowing what you want in your friends and getting rid of of all the toxic people in your life (and you should) it would be also be great if we gave new people a chance, because there are some really cool people out there! we all have something interesting to say in this world. Shout out to all my lovely friends! I miss you!
