I have been lucky enough to live in various places but there was always short periods of times (nothing to drastic) so experienced culture shock but I adapted quickly as I new it was going to be for 6 months top. Now that I am away for good culture shock is a beautiful thing that tortures me everyday haha 2 years in I’m still adjusting but here is what I have learned so far.
1. You develop a weird belief that everything in your home is superior. Everything! I used to watch house hunters international, and always had a laugh at the people in Europe asking for “American style” things, I though what is the big deal you can just put up with it. Now I’m one of those people and love it when I come across an American style anything. I did not know how much I took for granted everyday things. From food to washing machines to roads and cleaning supplies.
2. You are the weirdo. And that is ok. You will be that one person that is saying what you are not supposed to, are doing things that nobody else does and people might react or they might not care whatever but you should still do it. Never lose yourself in attempts to fit in, I put lemon on everything, people are disgusted and I still eat it enjoying every bit of it.
3. If you think you speak a foreign language perfectly. You don’t. Nothing will teach this like actually moving to a new place.
4. Anyone you meet from your home country is immediately your BFF. Again you can have absolutely nothing in common with this person but the fact that you miss/get annoyed at the same things and pretty much are basically going through the same thing is enough for a never breaking relationship to start.
5. Mini breakdowns in random places are a thing because everything annoys you and sometime it is too much. Like I saw clamato in a store and cried. So stupid but in that moment it reminded me of a million things that I miss or that I cannot do and it was too much, it depends on my mood or how times are but it happens more often than I care to admit but I am ok with it.
I’m ok with it!
6. Inanimate objects will become your mortal enemies, you don’t realize, it’s so simple but dealing with the same thing that annoys you on an everyday basis, will become something big. It’s part I hate whatever it is and part I hate my brain because at this point it should have understood that the light switch is outside the bathroom (WTF) along other things.
7. You will develop a love/hate relationship with any restaurant that has the food of your country. They are not doing it right, you wish they will just stop but at the same time no matter how far from reality it is, it’s nice to be in a place that feels just a little bit like home. But then your food arrives and you hate it once again.
8. Going to the supermarket makes you feel all the feels! there is nothing like a place full of food to remind you off all the brands you love that are non existent there, all the ingredient you need to make that once dish that always makes you feel good and how impossible it is to get them there, and just how far from what is normal to you are! hot dogs in a can? wut? and dont even get me started on the Mexican isle, its just there, mocking me! and then you find something and get all exited and buy it and turn out it tastes nothing like its supposed to! but not to worry you will soon find replacement or even better vertions of some thing and others well you will just have to learn to really appreciate them whenever you eventually go home and stock up!
9. You give up and embrace the fact that this culture is part of you now and enjoy the good things it has to offer. I can understand-ish doric now, have a weird obsession with highland cows, have learned so much about this amazing culture and I make a brilliant cup of tea (or so I am told). All these little things are part of who I am now and I am so happy I get to experience them.
10. You will go on master chef mode (kinda) since you can not go and get your favorite dishes you will attempt to make them, and it will be pretty damn awesome when they actually come out how they are supposed too!
11. You will get secretly (or not so secretly) angry of other people dissing your country, even if they are right, ain’t nobody gonna talk S**t about my momma!
Ain’t nobody gonna talk S**t about my momma!
12. You will never stop missing home! Duh! It is your home but now when you go home you will find that everything in this list happens all over again because well, duh! you have 2 homes now! or even 3 the more the marrier!
